GM-50746 features three alignment pins that secure the halves of the camshaft and idler scissor gears during timing chain system servicing. Before disassembly, the pins are threaded into the scissors gears to hold them against spring pressure. Once the timing chain and gears are reassembled, the pins are removed to allow the engine covers to be installed. If the gears are not retained, they must be reset without damaging the teeth or the internal spring. The cam gears can be reset using 0.090" tip 90-degree snap ring pliers to move the outer half, and the idler gear can be reset using two punches in the drive holes, with a pry bar between them. Once the gear halves are aligned, the GM-50746 pins can be installed to secure them in place.
