The case extension has two bearings. Each is installed into opposite ends of the extension housing. GM-51087 pilots inside the case extension bearing and installs each bearing below flush to the GM engineering depth specification of 3.85mm for one of the bearings and 11.3mm for the other. Positive stops on the tool ensure the bearings are installed to the required precise depths.
