The pinion flange is retained to the pinion by use of a snap ring and by a helical twist on the pinion shaft splines. Flange removal forces can be very high, especially with older axles or those affected by corrosion. Applying removal force directly to the pinion pilot shaft may result in damage to the pinion shaft, which is not replaceable, and will require replacing the entire RDM. GM-52058 is a puller pilot that fits over the pinion drive shaft pilot, directing the removal force into the larger surface area of the pinion itself. GM-52058 fits closely to the pilot OD, but its own ID is small enough to allow the pinion flange to pass around it, ensuring the flange can be removed.
GM-52058 is used with GM-24420-C or a commercially available balancer puller to safely remove the flange from the pinion. Unapproved methods may damage the pinion or the flange.
