Used to protect the transfer case Intermediate Drive Shaft (IDS) seal from the splines on the IDS during shaft removal or installation. Previously, the Essential GM-44394-A was too large in diameter, and the sides of the tool overlapped when installed. This overlap may cause overstretching of the seal and potential damage to the seal lip. Failure to use a protector may damage the seal, resulting in a transfer case fluid leak at the correct half-shaft location.
